Technical Support Overview
ArtiSan is a mailbox management and archiving solution for Microsoft Exchange. ArtiSan allows customers to centrally
manage user mailboxes, reduces the ongoing cost of email storage and ensures that valuable information can be retrieved
quickly and efficiently for compliance and knowledge management use.
The main purpose of ArtiSan is to provide automatic archival of items located in the Exchange repository to long-term
storage whilst still allowing access to those items from Outlook and OWA. This is not intended as a replacement for Exchange
backup, but as a complement to it.
ArtiSan integrates seamlessly with Active Directory and archives mail items and their attachments based on a series of rules
defined by the customer. This forms the vast bulk of material in the Exchange repository. The effect of this is to reduce the size
of the Exchange repository in favour of specialised long-term storage solutions.
ArtiSan rules can be created based on times and dates, group membership, content and size. The integrated rules engine is based
on Windows Scripting, rules being implemented as scriptlets. ArtiSan provides a UI to create the scriptlets for the majority of
cases. However, more customer-specific rules can be created directly in VBScript.
A key benefit of ArtiSan over its competitors is that it offers a zero-client install making it easier to deploy in both small
and large institutions. ArtiSan also includes an Outlook add-in that can be used to allow administrators and other key staff a greater
degree of control over the archival process.
